It’s important to look after our bodies especially with such hectic city lifestyles. The last few months in particular have been extra busy so I was delighted to be invited to take a journey to the Middle East… ummm I mean to the Miraj Hammam Spa at Shangri-La Hotel. Close enough right?!
Here I got to experience the Hammam & Gommage. A steam & body exfoliation that is part of the authentic traditions of the Middle East.
My treatment began with an invigorating 15 mins steam between high intensity & low mist steam – the Hammam. In centuries past, the Hammam was known as the “silent doctor”.
After relaxing and sweating out my stresses, I moved to another part of the chamber and plucked down on a Jerusalem gold marble slab, closed my eyes and let warm water cascade over my body in a waterfall shower. Blissful!
Next was the Gommage. My therapist scrubbed me from head to toe with eucalyptus infused black Moroccan soap. This experience is considered to be the ultimate detoxification. My skin was left feeling soft and hydrated.
After my treatment, I walked my baby smooth body to the lounge where I sank back in a pile of pillows and enjoyed baklava, grapes and mint tea. Then it was back to the hustle and bustle streets of TO. Well at least, I got to escape to the Middle East if only for an hour!
The Hammam & Gommage is a 30 mins treatment but budget an hour to enjoy the facilities. Cost is $135 on weekdays and $145 on weekends and it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone or paired with a relaxing massage or Caudalie’s Grand Facial.
